Italian. Gamba means leg. Literal translation: stringed instruments (supported) by the legs.

It is distinguished from the viola da braccio, a stringed instrument supported by the arm. Viole in French, Viol in English. It is said to have originated in Spain, and became popular during the Renaissance, especially for the enjoyment of ensembles at the court.

Even overlapped the parts of the madrigal. Compared to the violin family, it has a larger body, so it produces more resonance than volume.

Another difference between the viol family is that the back plate is flat.

The double bass is the closest modern musical instrument.

It has 6 or 7 strings. Some high-pitched musical instruments have five pieces. There are seven frets between semitones. Like the violin family, the post-Baroque viola da gamba has a sound post.

弦 Strings

It seems that many players use gut strings for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings of the bass gamba. When it comes to antique instruments, I think there is a strong tendency for people to look for the right strings (especially thickness) for their instrument on their own.

It is said that these unwound raw gut strings can be replaced with synthetic strings.

I found the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings suitable for my instrument, so I use these synthetic strings.
